Caves de Donnas

Donnas is a small village in the lower Aosta Valley located 300 m above sea level. Known since Roman times, viticulture in Donnas also has ancient traditions, despite it is characterized by a very difficult viticulture, which some call "heroic".

The vines are located above the steep slopes of the mountain, won by the centuries-old terraces held back by walls even 4 meters high. In Donnas, the situation of wineries is characterized by very small and fragmented sizes, where manual processing is almost an obligation. There are still no machines capable of reaching similar vines! In 1971, a group of winegrowers, after obtaining the Denominazione di Origine Controllata to the wine of Donnas, formed a cooperative with the precise aim of protecting and guaranteeing the quality and authenticity of the wine. Thus was born the cooperative of Caves de Donnas.

Donna's heroes

This cooperative is equipped with the most modern winemaking facilities and a long line of oak barrels for aging. Their headquarters is located in the area of origin of their vines, where Nebbiolo has always been cultivated, a variety for great red wines for aging and of which we have news since 1200. In Valtellina it is called Chiavennasca, while in Bassa Valle d'Aosta and in Canavese it is called Picotendro or Picotener. The environmental factors of this specific zone, the climate and the soil, have influenced to characterize the Nebbioli of the different zones, so much to recognize of the different biotypes, specific of our territory
