This grape variety originating in Valais may have some connection with the "Vitis Helvola" mentioned by Pliny. Recent studies would make it a descendant of a native vine of the Valle d'Aosta, reintroduced in the Valley only fifty years ago. Grown at Aymavilles between 550 and 650 meters above sea level.
